  2.     To us, the answer is supposed 
  3. to be obvious because we 
  4. respond appropriately to the 
  5. depth cues, which in this case 
  6. would be interposition, 
  7. perspective, and familiar size. 
  8. In the actual figure, however, 
  9. simple line drawings were used 
  10. to represent the objects. 
  11. Texture was absent. In fact, all 
  12. of the cues are, at best, weak in 
  13. the original figure. Even for us 
  14. the figure is ambiguous. Thus it 
  15. is hardly surprising that the 
  16. subjects in the experiment 
  17. often said that the spear was 
  18. aimed at the elephant.

  20.     One should also be cautious 
  21. about using size or shape 
  22. perception as an indicator of 
  23. depth perception in pictures. 
  24. That is because there is only a 
  25. tendency toward constancy 
  26. (rather than perfect constancy) 
  27. in viewing pictures, even 
  28. pictures rich in effective depth 
  29. cues (to say nothing of pictures, 
  30. such as HudsonΓÇÖs, in which the 
  31. cues are so poor that the 
  32. elephant looks as small as its 
  33. relatively small visual angle 
  34. would lead one to predict). 
  35. Thus, if members of some 
  36. African tribes report that an 
  37. animal in the picture near the 
  38. horizon looks much smaller 
  39. than the one of the same 
  40. species in the foreground of the 
  41. picture, it should not be 
  42. assumed that they are 
  43. perceiving any differently than 
  44. we do.
